Really loved this place! We tried the chef’s special and it was honestly one of the best pastas I’ve ever had. So flavourful and cooked perfectly. Definitely worth trying, and I’d happily come back again!

Decided with my partner to go for dinner to celebrate my daughter's birthday at Portorosa - never tried before so I was looking forward to sample their food. The alfresco was busy with customers already when we got there - we ended up sitting inside. My daughter wanted to try carbonara pasta (my daughter chose penne pasta which the waitress was happy to swap from the original pasta offered on the menu) and she also wanted to try pizza Margherita, while me and my partner shared Octopus entree and a Surf and Turf medium rare. The food came out quite fast and it was presented well - the octopus had acquired the flavour from the embers it had been cooked on ( the wooden fired pizza oven was round the corner from where we were sitting) and it was quite tasty and enjoyable, chewy enough but not in an unpleasant way. The steak was more rare than medium (which my partner wasn't extremely pleased about), but I enjoyed it ( it was almost melting in my mouth and the serving was quite generous). I had to try the Margherita ( pizza dough was firm and breast - could see the pizza oven did its job very well - I do like it a bit more cooked but it was a decently cooked pizza and still quite enjoyable). The carbonara pasta was unfortunately overcooked, when the owner of the restaurant came to check how everything was I did raise my concerns with the dish and he absolutely had no problems in cooking us an Al dente version ( he confirmed the penne pasta might have been the gluten free variant hence its consistency wasn't as we expected). As my partner put it, it felt like a restaurant in Italy where you casually walk in and have a good meal - with a friendly service and prompt attention. Looking forward to try more dishes from the menu - grazie Portorosa.

To reminisce on a classic Anthony Bourdain piece, still chasing the best pasta dish on Earth, I’d loudly point explorers of Fremantle cuisine toward Portorosa on Market Street. Portorosa — deeply entrenched in Freo history, authentic, and proper good food that tells a story. Owned by Sicilian-born Joe Napoli, and named after a coastal resort in Sicily in honour of his family, this is Mediterranean food that creates memories. The vibe we received from Joe is one of warmth and familiarity, and Joe welcomed us as you would family in your own home. The Scaloppine ai Funghi was tender, earthy, and perfectly balanced — no magic tricks, just respect for ingredients. The tagliatelle with crayfish was the standout: silky house-made pasta carrying signature WA fresh-from-sea richness , the kind of dish that makes conversation dwell on its perfect simplicity . A simple caprese salad reminded us why restraint is a virtue in Italian cooking — ripe tomatoes, proper mozzarella, and the subtleties of olive oil and basil. Dessert sealed it. A classic tiramisu done right, followed by a silky crème brûlée and a beautifully judged Negroni. The structure of all the meal courses was this: brass section consisted of chilled Barbarossa on sax and Nebbiolo on bass. The tempo was on point. Joe is doing things properly, you don’t question if the drummer is rushing or dragging, not even at the ending. Portorosa is a place to come home to. Portorosa isn’t chasing perfection. It’s chasing flavour, memory, and tradition — and hitting the mark. This is the sort of restaurant that makes you believe the best pasta in the world doesn’t need algorithms … it just needs the right hands.
